Harry, Joe and I have wanted to do something for The Book Bus for a while now, since seeing Quentin Blake’s fabulous illustration on a Waterstones book bag. Last week, after I published Calm Like a Stupid Feather – a second collection of Harry and Joe’s quotes – I realised that would be the perfect way to raise some funds (yes, it would have been better if I’d thought of this before I published, but you can’t have everything).
One in six adults around the world have come through childhood unable to read and write, a situation mainly due to lack of books and opportunity to read. In response to this shocking situation, the Book Bus was founded by publisher Tom Maschler with the aim of supplying books and making them accessible to children. In 2008 the Book Bus began delivering books to schools in Zambia and working with children to inspire them to read. They have since opened reading schemes in Zambia, Malawi, Ecuador and India where over 5,000 children now have books that are relevant and accessible.
The Book Bus is a charity funded entirely through voluntary donations. They are raising funds for books, classroom resources and their magnificent Book Bus fleet.
